What you take home in Pennsylvania
Where the federal tax came from
Every calculator gives you a total. This is the arithmetic behind it, one row for each bracket your income reaches. The rate on the last row is your marginal rate, and it applies only to the part of your income inside that band.
| Rate | On income between | Taxed | Tax |

What this leaves out
These are the 2026 federal brackets and the 2026 Social Security wage base of $184,500. The figure is a full-year estimate on salary alone: it applies the standard deduction for your filing status, and does not know about other income, credits, dependants, itemised deductions, or state and local taxes beyond the one named above. Employer-side payroll tax is not shown, because it does not come out of your pay.
Your actual withholding is set by the W-4 you filed, and rarely matches the tax you finally owe. That difference is what a refund or a bill in April is. This is arithmetic on the numbers you enter, not tax advice.
Questions
Does Pennsylvania have a state income tax?
Pennsylvania taxes wages at a flat 3.07%, with no standard deduction and no brackets, so the rate is the same on the first dollar and the hundred-thousandth. Most municipalities add a local Earned Income Tax on top, which this does not yet include.
How much is taken out of my paycheck in Pennsylvania?
Federal income tax, Social Security at 6.2% of wages up to $184,500, and Medicare at 1.45% with no cap. Pennsylvania income tax comes on top of those. The calculator above splits your salary into each of them.
What is the difference between my marginal and effective tax rate?
Your marginal rate is the rate on your next dollar of income. Your effective rate is the total tax divided by your whole income, and it is always lower, because the earlier brackets tax the earlier part of your income at their own lower rates. Being in the 22% bracket does not mean paying 22% of everything you earn.
Do 401(k) contributions lower the tax on my paycheck?
They lower income tax, not payroll tax. Money you put into a traditional 401(k) comes out before federal income tax is worked out, but Social Security and Medicare are still charged on your full wages. The calculator treats them that way.
