Your financial life is not an advertising product. Footnote does not sell personal or financial data.

What Footnote collects

Account details such as your name, email address, authentication identifiers, settings, and subscription status.

If you connect an institution through Plaid, Footnote receives the account names, types, balances, transactions, recurring activity, and—when available—investments and liabilities needed for the features you use.

Footnote also stores information you create: groups, expenses, splits, settlements, budgets, goals, rules, notes, receipts, notification choices, and support messages.

Product analytics

Footnote records limited events such as whether an invite, bank connection, receipt scan, or subscription step succeeded. These events use pseudonymous identifiers and exclude balances, amounts, merchants, transaction text, receipt contents, contacts, and credentials.

How data is used

To run and synchronize Footnote, calculate and explain your finances, manage shared expenses, provide support, prevent abuse, and verify purchases. Connections are read-only; Footnote does not initiate bank transfers or trades.

Who can see it

Members of a shared group can see the expenses, splits, payments, comments, and receipts shared with that group. They cannot see your private bank history.

Footnote uses service providers—including Apple, Google, Plaid, hosting, email, and notification providers—only as needed to operate the service or comply with law. Financial data is not used for third-party advertising.

Storage and retention

Hosted data is protected in transit and by access controls. Footnote keeps it while your account is active and as needed for security, legal, and operational obligations. Deleted information may remain briefly in protected backups.

Your controls

You can disconnect institutions, change notifications, export available data, leave shared groups, and delete your account from Footnote settings. Account deletion removes hosted account data subject to limited legal, fraud-prevention, and backup requirements.

Children

Footnote is not directed to children under 13.
