Export from Splitwise
Open a group on the web at secure.splitwise.com, then use the group's settings to export it as a spreadsheet. Splitwise exports one group at a time, so repeat it for each group you want to keep. The file lists every expense with its date, description, currency, total, and each person's share.
Do this on the web rather than in the app. The mobile app's share sheet produces a summary, not the full expense list.
Import into Footnote
Open Footnote, go to shared expenses, and choose the Splitwise import. Footnote reads the groups, the people, the expenses and the resulting balances, so you land where you left off rather than at zero.
People come across by the name on the expense. Anyone you invite later is matched to that name, which is why it is worth importing before you invite rather than after.
Do not settle up first
The instinct is to zero everything out in Splitwise and start clean. Resist it. A balance with no expenses behind it is a number nobody can check three months later, and checking is the entire point.
Import the history, keep the balances, and let the next real charge be the first one that starts from your bank feed instead of from typing.
What changes after the move
New shared expenses in Footnote start from a posted charge: the amount, date, merchant and original currency arrive from the bank, and you choose who it belongs to. The people you share with need no download and no account.
